Contractors at the Artillery Road development in Park Hall have been carrying out investigations following the discovery of two wartime bomb shells earlier this year.

Chartland Homes, the developers of the site, have undertaken three weeks of investigations, primarily searching for ordnance and ammunition following the discovery of bombs on June 5 and 18.

Residents of Park Hall have expressed concerns that there may be more hazardous materials that could be found at the site.

Andrew Jones, from Chartland Homes, said the company are aware of the situation.

"We have been carrying out investigation and until the whole site has been covered we won't be continuing with the development," he said.

"We are aware of the situation and we are working with Shropshire Council. We cannot carry out anymore excavations until the site and the problems are fully resolved.

"If it was the case that we found something more hazardous, it would be a process of identifying it, disposing of it, cleaning the whole site and conducting another test at the end to make sure it's clear. It would be a long process.

"We've also been made aware that residents have been on the site, which we ask them not to do."

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said that a former MoD contractor who worked on the site in the 1970s claimed that it was the "dumping ground" on the camp for hazardous materials.

"The buildings in those days were clad in asbestos but the army told the contractors to bury it.

"Chartland have only dug down the fringes of the site and clearly haven't come across the asbestos yet."

Tim Rogers, Shropshire Council’s area planning manager, said: “The developer is using a specialist contractor to deal with potentially dangerous military equipment at the site. They have been reminded of the need to undertake a full contamination assessment of the site and carry out any appropriate remediation. They have confirmed that they intend to comply with this requirement before any further development is commenced.”
