A COMIC con is set to become the latest annual event in Oswestry's calendar.

Martin Portlock, one of the event's organisers, hailed the inaugural Oz Con a success after more than 200 people visited Oswestry Leisure Centre to meet a host of names from the sci-fi and fantasy world.

He said: "It was absolutely brilliant. Everyone mentioned that it was one of the best comic cons they had come to. Every celebrity told us that it was the most friendly, relaxed and supportive comic con they've been to."

Mr Portlock said that there was "definitely room for expansion" at the event and praised Oswestry Leisure for their support.

He added that the organising team would hold discussions and an announcement would made imminently on plans for next year's event.

Guests at the event included North Wales actor Spencer Wilding, who played Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and actress Virginia Hey, of Farscape fame.

A host of other Star Wars performers also appeared, including Daniel Eghan, Matthew Dale, John Coppinger and Derek Lyons.

Organisers created memorable set-pieces for fans, where characters such as Deadpool, Wonder Woman, Darth Vader and the Daleks would walk out with special effects and music.

There was also a cosplay competition with a trophy and cash prize for the winner, judged by experienced cosplayer Aimee Swift.

The event also raised a substantial amount for Alzheimer's Research UK through collections and guests donating items for an auction.

Mr Portlock added: "This is all about bringing something new to Oswestry and I am quite proud to say that =not only myself but a great team working with me - we have done it."
