ONE of the main roads in Powys has been found to be the deadliest in Wales

The A483 enters Powys at Llanymynech and winds it's way past Welshpool and Newtown and on towards Llandridnod Wells and after Llanwrtyd Wells passed through to Carmarthenshire at

Data gathered by technology company Teleetrac Navman fvrom the Department of Transport has identified the A483 as the most dangerous road in Wales and throughout the UK coming only behind the A1 road in Rutland.

Between 2012 and 2016, a total of 8,534 fatal traffic accidents were recorded across some of the busiest roads in the UK.

In the same period, the A483 in Powys had the highest rate of fatal traffic accidents in Wales, with 4.312 per 10,000 residents.

The statistics show that the A483 is more dead above the A465 in Monmouthshire (2.694) and A5 in Denbighshire (2.637) that had the next highest rates.

Teletrac Navman have researched the data and has launched a map to identify the most high-risk roads, so that goods haulage companies can avoid accident blackspots.

Peter Millichap, UK Marketing Director at Teletrac Navman, said: “When operating a fleet, driver safety is extremely high on the agenda.

"As such, knowing which stretches of road are the most dangerous can help operators reduce the risk of accidents by adjusting their routes or schedules accordingly.

“This informative map, together with today’s telematics technology, provides fleet operators with greater visibility and access to powerful fleet management tools that go a long way toward monitoring its safety and efficiency on the road.”

One driver told the County Times: "I don't really like driving on it, it's very windy and slow, people get frustrated and take enormous risks overtaking on it."

"If I can I take other routes if I need to get to Builth or Llandrindod Wells from Montgomeryshire."

Have asked Dyfed-Powys Police for a comment whether they have to deal with more incidents on the A483 than other roads in the force area.
