AN EVENT took visitors on a trip through time to take a glimpse of life in centuries past.

Around 1,000 people visited Whittington Castle for the annual Multi-Period Living History Weekend, taking crowds on a journey from Saxon times to the Second World War.

Attractions at the two-day event included the Whittington Medieval Guild re-enacting the Battle of Maserfield, where King Oswald of Northumbria was slain in 642.

Thegns of Mercia provided demonstrations of Anglo Saxon weapons, music and fabric dyeing, while the Mercenaries of Mercia set up a medieval court of assizes and demonstrated trial by combat.

There was also a chance to sample come traditional Tudor cooking.

Visitors could also view demonstrations of weapons from the 18th century, as well as both world wars. Vehicles from the conflicts were also on display.

More events at the castle are planned for this year, including a family fun day on August 12 and a vintage fete on August 27.

In the works for next year are living history events to take visitors back to Tudor times and the Napoleonic period.
