Do you have a family member from the Second World War listed on the Oswestry Memorial Gates?

Local charity Qube is seeking the help of local families to help carry out research into the lives of the town’s Second World War heroes.

Last month Qube launched ‘Men on the Gates’, a website to commemorate those who lost their lives during the First World War. Qube now wants to research the lives of soldiers from the Second World War, but this will only be possible with the assistance of local families.

Qube CEO, Laurel Roberts explained: “It is much more difficult to research Second World War soldiers because the information is not in the public domain. The MOD keeps all service personnel records private until such times as they are made available through the National Archives. In order to access this information we have to have the permission of the closest surviving family member.”

Laurel said this new research would help to complete the archive.

She said: “Our researchers have been able to find out so many stories about the lives of First World War soldiers, but the picture won’t be complete until we have found out about those who lost their lives in the Second World War. These are all local heroes and their stories deserve to be told.”

Qube is asking any relatives of Second World War soldiers whose names are inscribed on Oswestry Memorial Gates, or anyone interested in the Men on the Gates project to pop into Qube and meet researcher, John Davies on either Friday, June 15, 22 or 29 between 10am and noon, or alternatively, call Qube on 01691 656882 or email c.jackson@qube-oca.org.uk.
