Pupils at Ellesmere Primary Academy revelled in the limelight when they staged a right royal celebration to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Megan Markle.

Children and staff all turned out for a traditional garden party, with nursery children dressing up as the wedding party and tea, scones and sandwiches served for lunch.

And they got a flavour of the media attention the happy couple will experienced on their big day, when ITV cameras and BBC radio reporters turned up to document the occasion.

The pupils, bedecked in red, white and blue, gave interviews to the journalists and posed with life-sized cutouts of Prince Harry and his bride as the festivities went on.

Assistant headteacher Abi Schwarz, who organised the event, said: “These celebrations generate huge excitement and are a great way for children to learn, have new experiences and make fantastic memories.

“We had a wonderful day, with the media teams here only adding to the childrens’ feeling that they were part of a special and historic occasion.

“We pride ourselves on creating diverse and interesting learning environments and work hard to make sure children don’t spend their days just sitting at a desk.

“And we’re lucky to have very dedicated staff and parent helpers who are always willing to go the extra mile to make these events possible.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved.”

Ellesmere Primary is part of North West Academies Trust (NWAT) which oversees a number of schools in Shropshire and Cheshire.

All the NWAT schools pride themselves on finding new and innovative ways for pupils to learn, often away from the classroom.

Pupils were taught all about the Royal Family and got a taste of the excitement these events generate by working on various related projects in preparation for their own big day.

Steve Docking, CEO of NWAT, said: “These events are a real team effort and are a great way for the whole school to come together to mark a special occasion.

“We pride ourselves on making learning fun and the approach is securing high attainment and levels of progress throughout our schools.”
