Phoebe Shaw, a Year 8 pupil at the Marches School has reached the National Final of a Peace Poster Competition organised by the Lions Club.

It is an especially memorable year for the Lions Club as it is celebrating its centenary year, having been formed in 1917/18 by Melvin Jones in Chicago.

Phoebe, whose tiger and deer drawing wowed the judges has previously beaten off competition in the Oswestry stage and then the regional stage to reach the National Finals.

With this, having won £25 in book vouchers for the Oswestry stage, she has now won £75 in book vouchers for winning the regional stage of the competition, as well as a £75 book voucher for the Marches School.

By winning the regional section of the competition, Phoebe defeated competition from Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales in the Peace Poster Competition which has been running for 31 years, and is the first Oswestry entry to reach the National Finals, which will take place in Basingstoke next week.

There are 12 finalists at the national stage, and if successful, Chloe will then move to the International Final, which takes place in New York.

Alison Pearson, headteacher of the Marches School, said: “We are so very proud of Phoebe and her accomplishments in this competition. She has done superbly well to reach this stage and we are excited to hear how she has done in the National Finals.”

Bill Bowen, Peace Poster officer of the Oswestry branch of the Lions Club, added: “Phoebe has done exceptionally well to get to this stage, being the first Oswestry entry to reach the National Finals since the competition started 31 years ago. This means a great deal to us at the local Lions Club as it is the centenary year.”
