A wreath was placed on a family grave to honour the 100th anniversary of the award of the Victoria Cross to an Oswestry soldier.

On Saturday, March 10, a wreath and photograph of Harold Whitfield in uniform wearing his Victoria Cross was placed on the family grave in Oswestry cemetery.

During the fighting in Palestine, members of the Shropshire Yeomanry were pinned down by machine gun fire from the Turkish positions.

Whitfield then charged and captured the machine gun post single-handed. He shot or bayoneted the whole of the gun's crew and then turned the gun on the Turks, driving them back with heavy loss.

Later he organised and led an attack with hand grenades against a Turkish advanced post, which had been established close to their lines and which was enfilading it.

He drove the enemy back, inflicting severe loss on them, and by establishing his own group in the captured position, saved many lives. For this inspiring example of initiative, courage and devotion to duty, he award the Victoria Cross.
