Students at North Shropshire College (NSC) celebrated National Pi Day yesterday.

March 14 is written as 14.3 in the UK, but as 3.14 in America, because of this, National Pi Day is celebrated around the world on this day.

The maths and English department at NSC decided it would be a great opportunity to celebrate the day with their own National Pi Day event. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the mathematical symbol used to represent a constant - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14159.

The day involved a number of exciting games and activities involving members of staff and students throughout the college, sporting activities, reading comprehension and planting circular pots were just some of the things taking place. These were organised with a focus on maths skills to demonstrate its importance in everyday life. The college refectory also got into the spirit of Pi Day by serving a selection of delicious pies to students and staff throughout proceedings.

Jo Millington, curriculum manager, maths and English at NSC said: “This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to find out more about the mathematical symbol Pi, and also the importance of maths in everyday life. They have really enjoyed the activities that we have organised, and we hope that we can build on the success of this year’s event in the future.”
