Whitchurch residents say they are fuming at the state of the roads in and around the town - and they have been left bemused at the quality of the repairs.

Following the recent cold weather, several of the roads around the town have been damaged and patchwork repairs have lead to a bumpy ride.

And with more cold weather forecast the situation is unlikely to improve.

Resident Paul Goldrick told the Herald he is furious at the state of the roads.

He commented: “The potholes are a disgrace, particularly given that we are among the highest council taxpayers in the country.

“It’s as if the local highways and byways are low on the list of priorities for Shropshire Council.

“What’s almost as infuriating as the potholes themselves is that the road technicians don’t seem to have a clue how to fill the potholes correctly.

“I’ve seen road workers throw asphalt into a hole, drive over it with the wheels of their van and carry on, total waste of time and of our money.”

Victoria Doran, Shropshire Council’s highways manager – north east, said: “Temporary safety defect repairs have been carried out.

“The road is inspected regularly, and any further safety defects that occur will be repaired as and when necessary, until the resurfacing work has been undertaken.”

Meanwhile, the Shropshire Council website also offers advice on how to report potholes.

It also includes videos and explanations of how potholes are created, what size they generally are, and how the authority repairs potholes on the county’s roads.

In 2015/16 around 18,000 potholes were identified with a further 2,000 reported to them by the public, costing £1.5 million to repair.
