Councillors in Wem are set to receive an update from a working party on data protection at its full meeting.

As the council holds data, it is required to abide by legislation, which is currently the 1988 Data Protection Act bit is set to be replaced by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May this year.

The working party's report states the council will need to make additional provisions, such as identifying a data protection officer within their organisation; however, they are awaiting to clarify if Penny O'Hagan, the town clerk, can be appointed to the role.

On Thursday, councillors will also discuss the possibility of outsourcing the data protection officer role but will not make a decision until clarification is sought.

The role of overseeing the compliance with GDPR is expected to be delegated to the Finance and Corporate Governance Committee.

Meanwhile, councillors are expected to submit any road safety concerns to Shropshire Council as well as considering quotes and samples for a 'Part Mayor's Badge'.

The idea, introduced by current mayor Councillor Edward Towers, is to give badges recognising their service to 16 former mayors who are still alive, with nine of that 16 serving councillors.

The council has received two quotes from David Harber WH Darby Ltd in Birmingham for the upfront cost of the production of up to 20 specific badges for £650.

A second option of 20 generic town council badges which could be used for a number of events, such as Honourary Townsmen, at a cost £800; however, the quotes are over six months old and may change.

Wem Civic Society, following their recent Annual General Meeting, have written regarding the lack of small public spaces or improving information to those that exist.

They will also receive letters from the Victorian County History Society, who are making a request for funds; the Royal British Legion Silent Soldier Initiative and a letter about contributions to Wem Town Hall .

In the private session, councillors are expected to approve issues concerning Wem Swimming and Lifestyle Centre.
