A PROJECT aiming to brighten up Wrexham town centre is under way.

The Wrexham Bunting Project, which is run by volunteers and was first trialled in the town last year, invites schools and residents to make either individual flags or strings of bunting which will be displayed in the town.

As well as making the town centre more colourful, the project also aims to “bring the whole community of Wrexham together” through its creative activities.

Participants can make their creations at home or take part in a drop-in flag decorating session on the last Saturday of every month at EmzCakes Creative Cafe in Chester Street from 11am to 4pm.

Nigel Lewis, chairman of Wrexham Town Centre Forum, said: “It encourages schools and groups to participate in a project to help decorate the town centre.

“One of the first schools was Wat’s Dyke School in Garden Village – they made lots of bunting and it will be displayed on Chester Street this Saturday during the street festival. Then it will go in different shops in the town.

“Bunting is very popular in lots of quaint villages – so why not have it in Wrexham?

“It is to brighten the town up and get something a bit quirky but also to encourage people to take an interest in something that us in the town centre.

“Hopefully more and more people will get involved.

“Anyone who wants to participate can go to the website and get the participant pack – we can provide the materials so people can participate for free.”

Bunting made at home can be dropped off at EmzCakes Creative Cafe in Chester Street.
