Wrexham Council has gone out to tender on plans to refurbish synthetic sports pitches at Chirk Leisure Centre, Ysgol Morgan Llwyd and five-a-side pitches at Queensway Stadium in Caia Park, Wrexham.

Interested parties had until Friday of last week to submit a tender, with the successful contractor expected to be appointed by the end of the month.

The three facilities are all operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Wrexham Council.

In November last year it was reported £300,000 would be spent on replacing three synthetic turf football pitches at Chirk and Queensway in Caia Park.

Freedom Leisure also proposed a 50 per cent funding contribution for a new pitch at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd and £500,000 energy efficiency investments at Waterworld, Gwyn Evans, Chirk and Queensway.

In addition, they have costed all the work identified in the recent condition surveys for those buildings in the portfolio for which they are responsible.

The proposed total investment is £6 million spread over the course of a 10-year contract.

In March, Freedom took on a 10-year contract to manage four leisure centres and five dual-use sports facilities across the county.

As part of the deal, the centres at Waterworld, Chirk, Gwyn Evans and Queensway will benefit from £2.25m of refurbishment.

Freedom Leisure is a not for profit trust which also manages 15 sites in Powys.
