St Martins Football Club hosted a night of celebration dedicated to its long-serving senior clubman, Derek Stokes.

Around 100 guests were in attendance for the secretive tribute to Mr Stokes at The Venue in Oswestry on Friday, October 7.

Ostensibly a celebration of the club’s history, a crowd comprised of former St Martins managers and players as well as representatives from many local football clubs and regional football associations gathered for the event.

Unaware that the evening was to be held in his honour, Mr Stokes was given a collective round of applause in recognition of his 70 years of dedication to the club.

The evening began with a commendation from Sue Schofield of St Martins Parish Council who reflected on his service for both the football club and his community, which resulted in him winning an Unsung Hero community award in 2013.

Several guest speakers including ex-Wrexham goalkeepr Glyn Thomas, Shropshire FA chairman, David Ralphs and referee representative Roger Parker, regaled those present with anecdotes and their fond memories of working with Derek over the years.

Club chairman, Terry Ellis gave the final tribute and reminisced with the crowd about the years he spent with Derek working in the Ifton Colliery as well as their time spent as St Martins teammates during their playing days – including the club’s Ethelston Cup wins in 1963 and 1970.

Reflecting on the evening, Mr Ellis said: “It was an immensely rewarding occasion and we were delighted to be able to pay tribute to Derek’s tireless work over the years.

“When Derek saw his photograph appear on the big screen he was shocked, even more so when everyone gave him a standing ovation for his services to the club over the last seven decades.

“The St Martins committee thank everyone who continue to support the club, especially Derek for his years of loyalty and dedication to the Saints.”

The evening culminated in a raffle featuring prizes donated by many of St Martins’ sponsors including Stans Superstore and The Keys public house.
