Following the success of Team GB at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, Oswestry Community Games is now all set for Sunday, September 25.

Hosted at Cae Glas Park from 11am, the Games are now in their fourth year and 2016’s event promises to be yet another successful day.

Organisers say they are delighted  with the increasing diversity of local organisations participating, with arts and sports clubs taking part to demonstrate what they do as well as offering ‘have-a-go’ sessions to visitors.

Activities and organisations new to this year’s schedule include hockey, paddlesports, girls’ rugby, archery, yoga, dance and themed short walks around the park.

The Games has secured the financial backing of Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry Sports Forum and commercial sponsors from the locality, including Active8, Primoris Homes, Pinnacle Slating and Tiling, Roofing and Salvage Depot, Nimbus Eye for Extreme Cleaning, Ethel’s Van Hire and Mountain Challenge Events.

Clive Knight, who is a key organiser and looks after the finances, said “It is amazing to have achieved this local financial support, and we are very grateful to all our sponsors.

“We are also delighted to have Mark Fosbrook from Whittington as our guest of honour.

“Mark is part of the Great Britain wheelchair basketball squad which won gold at the European Championships and automatically qualified for the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in September.

“Although he narrowly missed out on playing in Rio for the main team, he has been supporting the training and was selected as one of only four non-travelling reserves, which is a great achievement.

“We look forward to him being with us on the day, and supporting his chosen charity Special Effect.

“The working group, who are all volunteers, have worked tirelessly throughout the year to bring the Games to the park, but without the support of all our local organisations, the Games would not happen. We are therefore very grateful to them for also giving up their valuable volunteer time before and on the day.

“Finally, thanks must go to The New Saints who have increased their commitment at short notice to the day, and who will deliver an even wider range of activities across the park than last year.”
