A rider taking part in an epic cycle challenge visited the Canolfan Ceiriog Centre to promote the power of sport.

The centre is one of many throughout the UK to have received funding from the sports charity Sported, and was just one of the stops made by the director of Signia Wealth, Carnegie Smyth, who was fundraising for the charity.

The unique fundraising challenge aimed to support the growth and sustainability of community sport groups across the UK, like those at the Canolfan Ceiriog Centre.

The stop in Glyn Ceiriog formed part of Smyth’s ‘10:10:1000 Challenge’, which saw him cycle 1,000km from Belfast to London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in just 10 days last month.

Each of Smyth’s 10 stops were at Sported member clubs so he could see first-hand how sport is being used to transform young lives.

Having set off from Belfast on Saturday, August 6, Carnegie’s visit to Canolfan Ceiriog Centre came on the seventh day of the challenge.

While visiting the club he took the opportunity to meet the staff and got involved joining in with the Summer Holiday Sports Club activities and games for the morning.

Ellie Mills, who works at the Centre, said: “We were proud to welcome Carnegie at our Summer Holiday Sports Club here at Canolfan Ceiriog Centre in Glyn Ceiriog.

“We are a rural location and feel very lucky to have been supported by the Sported charity, enabling us to create opportunities for children to take part in activities they may have otherwise been unable to do locally.”

To date Mr Smyth’s efforts have raised in excess of £37,000. All of the funds raised will support the work of Sported throughout the UK.
