Oswestry lost a real thriller off the fifth ball of the last over at Wombourne on Saturday – and not for the first time, will feel they let slip a great chance of taking maximum points.

Another fine century by Warrick Fynn and 77 by Junaid Cassiem put Oswestry in a strong position as they shared an opening stand of 139.

Robbie Clarke came in once Cassiem was dismissed, and continued his run of good form as the score passed 200.

With 10 overs to go, Oswestry were on 210-1 – and a score well in excess of 300 looked on the cards.

But when Fynn was dismissed for exactly 100 and Clarke for 35, the innings fell apart and their final score was a disappointing 258-9 off 55 overs.

David Hemming (4-55) and Kuldeep Dirwman (4-58) were the most successful home bowlers.

Oswestry then dropped both openers Waqas Ahmed and Greg Clark before they had reached double figures, and they went on to score 61 and 47 respectively before falling to Charlie Morris.

Fynn also picked up three wickets and Oswestry seemed on course for a least a winning draw until Dirwan came in and blasted 38 off just 22 balls.

Ben Hudson, who had survived a confident appeal for run out a couple of overs earlier, then blasted the penultimate ball of the match for four to win the game.

Oswestry Seconds, who now find themselves in a relegation battle, played out a losing draw against Walsall Seconds in another excellent game at Morda Road.

Walsall were bowled out for 227, with Sam Davies taking three wickets in a fine spell of off-break bowling.

Nick Williams then hit 51 and Josh Coleridge 43 as Oswestry made a brave effort to get the runs. They finished on 189-9 to take eight points from the game.

A maiden century by Domuinic Kular was the highlight of Oswestry Thirds’ seven-wicket defeat against Wellington Fifths at Morda Road on Saturday.

Kular hit 103no and shared a century stand with Owen Aspinall (52) as Oswestry reached 195-3 in their 40 overs.

But Wellington batted well in reply, and took the spoils by making 196-3.

Oswestry Fourths were the club’s only winners at the weekend, coming back from Wellington Sixths with a five-wicket success.

Wellington made 171-6, and Oswestry replied with 174-5 thanks largely to 56 by Jack Roberts and 38no by Ivor Pearsall.

n Oswestry are back at Morda Road on Saturday when they take on Stratford-upon-Avon (midday).

The Seconds travel to Shrewsbury Seconds in a local derby (12.30pm).

The Thirds visit Bomere Heath Thirds on Sunday, when the Fourths play their Bridgnorth counterparts at Morda Road (both 1.30pm).
