A YOUNG girls cricket team had their opponents in a spin when they took part in the finals of the Lady Taverner’s Girls School Indoor Cricket Competition.
The under-15s side from Moreton Hall School in Weston Rhyn finished fourth in the tournament, which was held at the home of British cricket, Lords in London, recently.
The side, which beat a number of teams to progress to the finals, lost to Felsted School and Queen Elizabeth School, before beating Leicester Grammar School by 42 runs, including an incredible performance for bowler Freya Beasley (5-10).
“The girls have had an incredible season,” said Kate Simlett-Groves, head of sport at Moreton. “To finish fourth in this national competition is an outstanding achievement and something they should all be very proud of.
“Cricket has always been on the summer sports calendar but, like the rest of the country, we are experiencing a real rise in interest for the sport and the girls’ skills are developing at an impressive rate.”
The school is also supporting development cricket with the installation of indoor cricket nets, while it is also supporting Oswestry Cricket Club’s development of a woman’s team.
