English Schools Championships 2013
Three Oswestry Olympian athletes were selected to represent Shropshire at the English Schools Track and Field Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, competing against the best young athletes in England.
Emily Ball, from the Marches School, had gained standards in both shot and discus again this season and after winning a bronze medal in the junior girls shot in 2012, Emily chose to compete in the discus this year as she moved up to the Inter girls age group.
As one of the youngest in the competition Emily threw a mighty 35.47m to finish seventh, only four metres behind the winner.
Oswestry Olympian, Georgia Dixon from Ellesmere College was also competing in her second English Schools Championships and was drawn in a difficult heat on the first day of competition in the Inter girls 80m hurdles.
With the eventual winner in her heat, Georgia powered her way to fifth position but it wasn’t fast enough to reach the semi-finals.
Wrekin College pupil, Leo Read, also a member of Oswestry Olympians, qualified for the Inter Boys 100m hurdles in his first year over the longer distance. After hitting his ankle on the first few hurdles he was unable to complete the race.
All three athletes will be vying for places in the Shropshire team again next year.
