Oswestry Thirds/Veterans 24,
Avonmouth Veterans 12
THE Bristol side, touring as Hells Angels, had booked this visit many months ago, so six inches of snow on the pitch was never going to be a problem.
Oswestry fielded a mixed side, but always had enough pace to see them home.
Drop kicks were abandoned and many knock-ons occurred but the referee kept the game going and Oswestry soon scored under the posts with scrumhalf Jonny Longfellow his usual lively self, evading tackles to touch down under the posts.
Returning heroes Rich Owen and Rich Pierce combined to score the next try when Pierce tackled their fullback well and the ball was dropped, leaving Owen to pick it up and canter in. Avonmouth kept trying and a kick through saw Rich Lumby caught in two minds and robbed of the ball for Avonmouth to get a deserved score.
A stiff drink helped revive the sides at the break, but Oswestry soon made the game safe when Longfellow again helped himself to a second. The try of the match then occurred when Rich Wynne had a good run on the wing and his inside pass found Lumby who dummy passed before he found Steve Charmley steaming up the wing to take the pass and do a swallow dive to score.
Avonmouth finished with a try by Oswestry’s Marcus Lowe who was playing for them.
