ONE of the biggest turnouts for years saw a parade of more than 300 people joined by a large congregation for the Act of Remembrance at Oswestry’s memorial gates.

Among the wreath layers were local MP Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for the Environment; Shropshire Council leader Councillor Keith Barrow and the council’s speaker Cllr David Lloyd along with Oswestry Town Mayor, Cllr Martin Bennett.

For the first time in living memory the wreaths from the various organisations were so numerous that they could not all be accommodated on the gates and several had to be laid on the ground.

The Act of Remembrance was led by the Vicar of St Oswald’s Parish Church, the Rev Simon Thorburn, with the Last Post and Reveille sounded by Carol Jones, principal cornet player with Porthywaen Silver Band.

CHIRK’S Royal British Legion dedicated a new ‘Standard’ at the town’s Remembrance Sunday service.
The dedication at St Mary’s Parish Church was followed by the annual parade followed by a service of remembrance, commitment and dedication at the town’s cenotaph led by Reverend Ben Parry.

ELLESMERE Cadets marched past the Cenotaph in London on Sunday.
The group of 28 14-18-year-olds from Ellesmere College were joined by their leader, Lieutenant Colonel Martin Clewlow, who said: “Not only is it the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, but it is also the 60th anniversary of the Combined Cadet Force Association, so this is a wonderful honour.”
