South Lancs/Cheshire League Division Two
Oswestry Eagles 19, Wallasey 0

OSWESTRY bounced back from their recent heavy defeat at Sefton to record a comfortable home win over newly promoted Wallasey with Gareth Hughes scoring two of Oswestry’s three tries as they triumphed without reply.

The performance restored plenty of pride for the Eagles who recorded their seventh win of the season in comprehensive fashion against a Wallasey side which had suffered five defeats on their travels prior to kick-off.

And after putting the Wallasey side to the sword the result sees Oswestry maintain their unbeaten home record as Chris Crutchley also crossed the line as well as knocking over two conversions.

With neither side able to wrestle control of the game in the opening 25 minutes, Oswestry fed the ball to right-winger Tom Shillito who made 30 yards before being hauled down.

The second phase saw the ball switched swiftly across the line for Hughes to score as he received it on the left wing with Crutchley converting to settle Oswestry nerves.

Five minutes later an Eagles scrum inside the visitors 22 saw Crutchley pick up the ball and take on the Wallasey winger to power his way over in the corner to put Oswestry 12 points in front.

Wallasey were now hanging on and from a clearance kick into home half Gareth Morris collected and fed the centres. The ball again made its way to Hughes who was eventually brought down just five yards out.

The second-half saw more even passages of play with Wallasey eventually pressurising the Oswestry line for the first time. But their rolling mauls and drives by the pack were well defended by the home side who began to enjoy plenty of possession as the visiting attack again came to nothing.

In the final ten minutes Oswestry secured turnover ball inside the visitors half and Nick Carlton picked up the lose ball before feeding Hughes who cut inside to score his second try under the posts to provide Crutchley with an easy conversion.

Oswestry are without a game this weekend but return to action on November 17 when they travel to Buxton at 2.15pm.
