PLANS for a synthetic hockey pitch with floodlighting at Oswestry School have been revealed.

The proposal submitted to Shropshire Council last month details the pitch which will be used primarily for hockey, but with provisions for five-a-side football and other academic sports, as well as community use. Details state the floodlighting will be switched off by 10pm.

The scheme follows controversial plans for a car park on land at nearby Maes-y-Llan, which had caused concern over loss of sports pitch provisions by Sports England, who have been asked to comment on the proposal.

Agents Oswestry-based Design and Planning Associates state: “The new pitch is designed to serve as a new facility for the school that will provide greater use and flexibility of the existing playing fields, and therefore stimulating higher levels of sport and physical activity. Primarily this will be for those associated with the school but equally the greater community who due, to the existing surface constraints currently, have limited opportunities to play and enjoy sport.”

Shropshire Council is expected to make a decision by December 20.
