A MAN was taken to hospital with a suspected back injury after his car struck a bridge near Chirk.

The man was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital following the one-vehicle collision involving a Hyundai on the viaduct between the Halton and Gledrid roundabouts on the A483 leading to the A5 near Chirk at 12.40am on Monday.

The bridge was not due to be re-opned until 7pm on Monday while engineers assessed the bridge for structural damage.
There were heavy tailbacks as traffic was diverted through the villages of Gledrid and Chirk using the B5070.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: “Our officers and those from North Wales Police were called after reports a car had struck the bridge barrier.
“The male driver was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital with suspected back and neck injuries.
“The road was closed and diversions put in place.”

A spokesman for North Wales Police added: “We got a call at 12.40am from a member of the public reporting a road traffic collision on the bridge between Halton and Gledrid roundabouts.

“There was damage to the barrier.”

One fire engine from Oswestry was also deployed to the scene.
Yesterday the crash site was visited by a structural engineer from the Conwy Structures Group, which manages the trunk road.
A temporary parapit was installed while an assessment was carried out.
