MEMBERS of Oswestry Sub-Aqua Club took the fundraising plunge recently and surfaced with a grant from Sport England.

The £2,642 grant has allowed the club to buy four sets of smaller sized scuba diving equipment suitable for the use of younger people at the club’s home at Oswestry’s Leisure Centre.

Try Dive sessions have been a popular feature since the centre opened last October but many of those wishing to take part were teenagers who found the adult equipment too large for them.

Soon after moving to its new home the committee launched their successful funding bid which led to three club members visiting Divers Warehouse in Bradford to select the equipment.

A club spokesman said: “The club knows this new kit will be put to good use and will serve to enhance the Try-Dive experience for youngsters of Oswestry and surrounding areas.”

Oswestry Sub Aqua Club has provided Try-Dive sessions for pupils on the Marches School Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme for a number of years as well as local Scout Groups.

“With this new equipment we will be able to continue providing Try-Dive sessions to more young people and hopefully encourage them to take up the sport at a later stage,” the spokesperson added.
