OSWESTRY’S Mile End roundabout could be set to undergo a major facelift as part of a campaign to improve the town’s ‘gateways’.

The site, which is the first point of contact for most visitors travelling from the Midlands and Mid Wales, could be renovated under plans by Shropshire Council to update a number of roundabouts across the county.

But with discussions between the council and landowner the Highways Agency in their infancy, no firms plans have been announced on how the landmark could look.
Councillor Martin Bennett, mayor of Oswestry, said: “It could be a complete revamp, but with the development of the urban extension for eastern Oswestry it could be that the shape of the roundabout is changed and we don’t want to do the work then find that out a few months later.”

Oswestry’s Footfall scheme also announced a new roundabouts initiative last week in a bid to boost the appearance of the town’s entrances.

Councillor Stephen Haworth, who is a member of the community partnership arts scheme, told the Chamber of Commerce they were in the process of waiting for Highways Agency permission before going ahead with the work.
