OSWESTRY skipper Mark Robinson has called on the town’s cricket lovers to come down to Morda Road on Saturday to support his team in the biggest game in the club’s 157-year history.

Robinson’s side need just one point from the match against Tamworth to clinch promotion to Division Two of the Birmingham League and a further six points will earn them the league title they could have won at the weekend if only they had been able to claim the final wicket at Wednesbury.

The last home pair held out for seven overs to deny the Morda Road men, as Wednesbury finished on 145-9 in reply to Oswestry’s 215 all out. Spinners Warrick Fynn (5-32) and Robinson (3-39) did the bulk of the damage, but a missed stumping by Dean Suter off the bowling of youngster Charlie Morris in the penultimate over proved costly.

The key moment in the Oswestry innings came when Fynn was given out caught in the gully for one. As he made his way back to the pavilion, Wednesbury skipper Bal Matharu called him back as he thought his fielder might have grounded the ball.

It was a remarkable display of sportsmanship, and Fynn went on to make 61, sharing a second wicket stand of 129 with Peter Holloway (50). Ian Davies hit two big sixes in an unbeaten 27 at the end.

Saturday’s big game at Morda Road starts at noon, and entry is free. The bar will be open all day, and there will be a post-match barbecue.
