A FIELD of more than 430 runners, a new course record and strong performances from Oswestry Olympians, gave the finish line crowds plenty to cheer at this year’s third running of the Ellesmere 10k road race.

This year’s event was won by Tom Humphries of Cannock and Stafford Athletics Club in a course record time of 29.12 minutes with the first woman home Michelle Ross-Cope of City of Stoke.

The first Olympian home was Paul Jones in ninth place overall, with the first Olympian woman over the line, Jacqui Smith, who finished 78th overall, alongside another good run by Ian Lowe who was 14th and Tim Gears and Dave Newton who both finished in the top 40, while special mention was made of Paul and Lauren Davies who managed to organise the popular event despite having only very recently added a new baby boy to their family.
