HUNDREDS of people turned out to see Oswestry’s Christmas Lights switched on.

Children’s hero Bungle the Bear, from 1980s show Rain-bow, was on hand to sink the plunger as the town was illuminated with a dazzling display which is new for 2015.

In the build-up to the anticipated event, children from primary schools across the town took the to stage to perform Christmas carols, along with Derwen College’s Makaton choir and dancers from Stagecoach.

Bungle, who gifted a golden microphone for the event, told the Advertizer: “It was lovely. What was really good was, when I pressed the plunger, the lights came on because that didn’t happen last year – I didn’t get electrifififcuted.

“Geoffrey, George and Zippy are going to be so jealous when I tell them all about it. It’s all Christmassy now.”

The Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor Peter Cherrington, who joined Bungle on stage alongside footballers from The New Saints Football Club to perform I’m a Little Teapot before the big switch-on, said it has once again been an excellent event.

He continued: “I think this year’s lights are absolutely amazing. We are so chuffed with them.

“All the choirs were excellent and when we have Christmas Live on December 4 and the Christmas Parade the following day it will be even better.”
