CARL DARLINGTON believes the new Wrexham manager could come from within the club.

Wrexham extended their unbeaten run to four games under caretaker boss Darlington as Joe Clarke’s superb first half strike secured a 1-0 victory at title chasing Grimsby Town on Saturday.

Darlington, first team coach under Kevin Wilkin who was sacked as manager a fortnight ago, has ruled himself out of the running for the job and the board have been holding interviews with a shortlist of applicants.

The New Saints manager Craig Harrison and ex-Reds’ midfielder Kevin Russell have been linked with the position but Darlington feels Glyndwr Wrexham Football Academy boss Lee Jones and skipper Dean Keates could be worth considering.

“It has been a joint team effort and we are just keeping that seat warm ready for the manager whoever that may be,” said Darlington, pictured.

“I don’t want the job personally, but I think there are good people in the club as well who possibly could have an opportunity to.

“Playing wise you have possibly got Dean. He is 37-years-old now, he is a leader and he is a possibility.

“You have also got Lee. Nothing has been mentioned about Lee. He has been with me in that dug-out since the first game and that might be a possibility, I don’t want to put words into his mouth.

“I don’t know if they have applied, I am just saying that there could be people within as well but there is also good candidates to pick from other sources too.”

Darlington would like to remain at The Racecourse in a coaching capacity whoever takes charge.

“The new man might not want me, he might bring his own staff in. You don’t know in football,” said Darlington.

“Obviously they are interviewing at this moment in time so we will have to wait and see.”

Wrexham have won two and drawn two games under Darlington and with four matches remaining, starting with tomorrow’s trip to lowly Welling United, he says the aim is to remain unbeaten until the end of the campaign.

“We want to try and go unbeaten all season,” said Darlington. “They are a fantastic group of players, everything is not about me or the coaching staff, it is about them.

“They have put in the performances, they have bought into what we wanted to try and do.

“Nothing much has really changed, it is just giving them the opportunity to go and play and to express themselves.

“They have done that and we are getting the consequences right.”
