ASPIRING journalists now have the chance to study sport as part of the journalism course at Glyndwr University.
The university, at Wrexham, will introduce sports journalism as one of the topics within its one-year National Council for the Training of Journalists’ accredited course.
“We have had a regular stream of requests from young people who wanted to study sports journalism as part of a general news reporting programme at Glyndwr University. It is a logical development for our course considering the university’s strong links with sport in the region,” said course leader, Janet Jones.
The programme gives aspiring reporters the chance to qualify for their NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, the industry standard qualification for trainee journalists. It is run in partnership with newspaper publisher and Advertizer parent company NWN Media, and is the only NCTJ-accredited course in North and Mid Wales.
The new development builds on the university’s strong links with sport organisations across the region including ownership of the Glyndwr University Racecourse stadium which is home to Wrexham FC and the North Wales Crusaders rugby league club.
The journalism team has already recruited senior journalist, Jon Simcock, to lecture on the NCTJ sports journalism module. Other topics studied on the course include media law, news reporting, shorthand and public affairs.
Jon Simcock, former deputy editor of a major regional daily newspaper and who now edits his own news magazine, will be joined by Robert Platt who has worked as a sports journalist for radio, television and newspapers throughout his career including BBC Radio 5Live.
They join Janet Jones, a senior journalist and journalism trainer, as part of an experienced journalism lecturing team.
The course also offers more than six months of embedded work experience on NWN Media titles across North Wales and Cheshire. Students spend two days each week in real newsrooms under the supervision of senior journalists from NWN Media.
