CONSERVATIVE Guto Bebb ended Labour’s long hold on the Aberconwy seat.

With 10,734 votes, 36 per cent of the vote, Mr Bebb was named MP last night.

Speaking at Venue Cymru he said a Conservative MP would make a huge difference to the constituency, which had been a Labour stronghold during the 13-year term of Betty Williams.

Mr Bebb thanked the other candidates for putting up a good fight. He said: “I can promise I will work hard for every person in Aberconwy, providing what we need.”

Mr Bebb pledged to serve the people of Aberconwy with “integrity” and “honesty.”

The 41-year-old self-employed economic development consultant said the election was about change, a fresh start and new thinking.

The electoral boundaries have changed since 2005, when Mrs Williams was named Conwy MP.

The 41-year-old had signalled his intentions five years ago when he came second against former Labour MP Betty Williams. She opted not to stand for re-election, leaving the spot open for candidate Ronnie Hughes.

Speaking after the announcement Mr Hughes, who gained 7,336 votes, said: “We have proved Labour have a chance and are back.”

The turnout in the seat was 67.41 per cent.
