THE streets of Llandrindod Wells came alive as they buzzed with hundreds of people lining the route in the bright sunshine to watch the town’s carnival procession.

After gathering at the Powys County Hall car park, the floats and fancy dress entrants participated in a very colourful parade around the town before returning to the Temple Gardens for a full afternoon of activities and fun.

The mayor, Jon Williams and his wife, Jo, crowned the newly elected carnival queen Jess Vellacott, before Jess presented the awards to the participants.

The overall top award for the best float went to ‘Rascals Reef’ which was created by Little Rascals Nursery. They won the new Gordon Phillips Cup presented to the carnival a few weeks ago by Cllr Williams, in recognition of Gordon Phillips’ contribution to the carnival.

There was amazing attention to detail in the floats and it was really good to see more individual entries in the fancy dress section and entries to the new category of Best Buggy or Pram.

After the formalities and presentations there followed an afternoon of fun, music and great entertainment on the green with Meirion Owen and the Quack Pack, and the Axe Men. The pirate and balloon modeller entertained too, plus music provided by the Llandrindod Wells Silver Band and the Newtown Youth Marching Band.

A lorry pull in Middleton Street later in the day saw a number of teams participating and again great interest was created by those who watched the event and encouraged their teams to put more effort in.

There was a music stage and Charlotte’s Web was the amazing band for the evening. They were excellent and kept the vibe going all evening and many people stayed to enjoy the music. Soloist Angharad Gough also provided some entertainment.

Carnival committee chairman Michael Gough said: “In all it was a great day for everybody and it was fantastic to see such large crowds in the town and on the green afterwards.”

Llandrindod Wells carnival is organised jointly by Llandrindod Round Table and Ladies’ Circle.
