AMBULANCE response times have come under fire from Oswestry’s town mayor following an incident at a civic service.

Councillor John Gareth Jones said he was “greatly concerned” at what he described as a “serious incident” after it took West Midlands Ambulance Service over an hour to attend a 999 call to a person who had collapsed at the First World War commemoration service held last Sunday.

A paramedic took 30 minutes to arrive.

When the ambulance eventually arrived, 80 minutes after the initial call, crews explained they had travelled from Telford despite those on the phone to the control room being told it was “in close proximity” 10 minutes after they made the first call.

Cllr Jones said despite his concerns the first responder, who arrived soon after the call, and the paramedic, should be praised.

He continued: “I was greatly concerned at the delay in the actual arrival of the ambulance.

“The first responder and paramedic provided a wonderful service but it was clear that the ambulance itself was needed.

“After the various reassurances that additional services are to be restored to market towns then questions must be asked.”

A WMAS spokesperson said although they had more ambulances than usual on that day they were all in action, adding: “While we regret any delay, we always strive to get to patients as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately, on this occasion it was not as fast as we would have wanted for which we apologise.”
