A FRIENDS group in Ellesmere has voiced its ‘disappointment’ at plans for a community building.

The Friends of the Mere say they had obtained funding to renovate Tricia’s Pavilion in the Cremorne Gardens with the aim of using it in association with local schools.
However, last week Shropshire Council confirmed plans to renovate the building to sell tea and cakes.

A spokesman for the group said: “Friends of the Mere obtained funding to renovate Tricia’s Pavilion in the Cremorne Gardens as a resource for local schools.

“We are led to understand there are proposals to now offer the pavilion as a commercial outlet.

“Friends of the Mere is disappointed that financial strictures force Shropshire Council to consider this move.”
So far the unitary authority’s plans have only gone as far as a survey asking what people would like to see the building used for with the hope of getting interest and potential tenants before anything gets the go-ahead.
Most recently the building has been modernised to provide wildlife information to youngsters.
