TRIBUTES have been paid to a “committed and dedicated” music teacher and church organist who has lost her battle with cancer.

Veronica Donkin, 69, died on June 27 following a 15-month battle with cancer of the caecum (intestine). Her funeral took place yesterday, Monday, at St Oswald’s Parish Church, Oswestry.

She and her husband, Mike, dedicated their time to developing music at St Oswald’s Parish Church in Oswestry since they came to the town in the year 2000.
Veronica was joint director of music and the organist of the church but also took the lead during the church’s organ restoration appeal in 2007, which was completed just before Easter this year.
Mr Donkin said: “She endeared herself to the countless people who knew her. She was a committed and dedicated teacher, and particularly took huge delight in inspiring young people with a love of music.
“It was a cruel twist of fate that, after such hard work and dedicated fundraising, she was too ill to play the newly-restored instrument although she did hear it played on Easter Day.
“She will be a terrible loss to her family and the St Oswald’s Choir and congregation who she considered as part of her wider family,” he added.
A memorial service will take place on September 28 at the church where a plaque will be laid on the organ in her memory.
