TRIBUTES have been paid to a “popular” and “determined” teenager who died following a battle with cancer.
Matthew Fox (pictured), from Nantmawr, near Oswestry, has been described as a “thoughtful, intelligent and kind young person” by the headteacher of Llanfyllin High School where the 18-year-old attended and had planned to study for his A-levels in September.
Matthew, who turned 18 in May, died on Saturday, June 21 after being taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital days before.
Headteacher of Llanfyllin High School Carl Mincher said: “Matt was a very popular student with so many good friends, students and teachers at Llanfyllin.

“He was a thoughtful, intelligent and kind young person; he always had a smile to share. Matt was determined to beat his illness; he proudly announced his intention to begin A-level biology and chemistry courses next September when he was last in school at the end of May.
“His courage and fortitude throughout his illness have been an inspiration to us all. I have been particularly humbled by the care he showed his peers during their exam period recently.
“We will miss Matt tremendously. The staff, students and governors extend our sincere condolences to Matt’s family as well as our gratitude for the wonderful times we have shared with him.”
The funeral of Matthew is to be held at St Michael’s Parish Church, Llanyblodwel, on Friday, July 4 at 2.30pm, followed by a private cremation. Black need not be worn and donations will be to Hope House Children’s Hospice.
