A POOL tournament in memory of a young man killed with a sword has raised £500 for charity.
Trainee accountant Danny Jones, 21, from Chirk, was fatally wounded with a 30cm-bladed ornamental sword on April 24 in Lord Street, Oswestry.
Richard Adam Reece, 19, from Oswestry, was jailed for 12 years after he was found guilty of manslaughter last November at Birmingham Crown Court.
A tribute pool tournament was held at The Stanton Inn in Chirk on Saturday, March 15 hosted by the pub’s pool team who the father-of-one used to watch play.
One of the players and organisers of the Danny Jones Memorial Cup, Ian Jones, said: “The event went really well and there was a good turnout with 32 players entering
.
“We raised £500 through the tournament and a raffle which will be donated to the Wales Air Ambulance.
“Many of us on the team knew Danny well as he used to come down and watch us play.”
The money raised included a £130 donation from The Stanton Inn landlord Mark Jones and a £50 donation from the pool team’s captain Marcel Cheetham.
The winner of the tournament was Clive Holgate who beat Terry Nash in the final and the two losing semi finalists were Alan Penrose and Tom Williams.
Mr Jones added: “We are going to make this an annual event and raise money for charity every year. We would like to thank everyone who supported us.”
He also thanked event sponsors by Carrs Loves Barrs, who were Danny’s employers.
