LAKELANDS Academy is preparing to take over the running of its on-site sports facilities next week.
The move comes after Shropshire Council announced the decision to stop managing services at the academy last year as they continue to tackle financial pressures from budget cuts of £80 million announced last year.
Tina Evans, academy administrator, said: “The governors of the school have decided we will carry on offering the same facilities so people in the local area can still have their sporting activities.
“The service will be the same for people, we are offering all the same facilities and the same staff will be running it. The only difference will be that they are invoiced by the academy instead of Shropshire Council,” she added.

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “As a commissioning authority, we are looking to transfer the responsibility for the operation of leisure facilities to local organisations and groups, and indeed this has already taken place with positive results at a number of joint-use sites across the county.
“In the case of Lakelands Sports Centre, it will be ideal for Lakelands Academy to manage the facility as the school is at the heart of the community and understands its needs. This will enable activities and programmes to be based more closely on the demands and needs of users from in and around Ellesmere,” he added.
The academy is offering its sports hall, dance studio, all-weather pitch and tennis courts and fitness suite for public use. The hall and dining room are also being offered for use as a meeting venue.
