AN OSWESTRY councillor has dismissed reports that a vital youth centre is to shut
Councillor Vince Hunt dismissed suggestions that The Centre could close as Shropshire Council plans to change youth services across the county.
Speaking at last week’s town council meeting last week he said: “Services are not closing in Oswestry and the idea that centres are shutting is absolutely not the case.
“There is a review going on and the local joint committee are feeding into that review. We need to make sure we maintain and even improve the services in Oswestry.
“That centre is not going anywhere.”
Shropshire Council issued four options for public response to shape youth services in the face of ongoing budget reductions.
Three offer varying reductions in sessions and funding for local area youth boards and the fourth gives people the chance to offer alternative suggestions.
Changes are expected to come into place next month.
As well as cuts to services, voluntary redundancies of youth service staff are expected to bring savings to £140,000.
Jay Moore, chairman of Fusion Arts Oswestry at The Centre, said the changes could open more doors for youth services in Oswestry and urged people not to focus on the “doom and gloom” of the situation.
He said: “A lot of people are locking in on options one to three and believe that youth services will be shut. But the final option is what most people are pushing for and we are moving in that direction with Fusion Arts.
“What I took away from the meeting was that it is clear there will be no closures. But the situation is not black and white and we are trying to find ways through it. I don’t think it is all doom and gloom opens a lot of doors for things to be done differently.”
Councillors agreed to ask Shropshire Council for an extension on the current consultation which is set to close on March 31.
