AN ELLESMERE man is gearing up for an extreme triathlon this year when he runs, swims and cycles his way from London to Paris for a local charity.
Nick Thomas is preparing for the Enduroman Arch to Arc Triathlon in September to raise money for Hope House Children’s Hospice near Oswestry.
The challenge will see competitors run 87 miles from the Marble Arch in London to Dover, where they will swim the English Channel to Calais. From there the triathletes cycle 185 miles to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Nick, 42, said: “I’ve always done endurance events for years and this is an advancement of that.
“I wanted to do something bigger and better than I had done before and this is not something you can do in the spur of the moment, it’s a little bit off the wall.”
Nick booked the challenge in 2011 and began training specifically for the event last September. He runs between 60 and 70 miles a week, swims 20 miles a week and cycles indoors while the weather is cooler.

But Nick, a building contractor, does not feel worried about the task ahead.
He said: “I swim in open water a lot anyway and to go into this challenge with worried would mean you are not in the right place to take part. I’ve had three years to think about it and even at 12 months out I knew what I needed to expect.”
He is being sponsored by the Lion Quays where he trains, The Lab in Oswestry where he has had fitness tests and also his local pub in Ellesmere, The Red Lion, where donations can be made.
Lynsey Kilvert, fundraiser for Shropshire and Powys Hope House Children’s Hospices, said: “We cannot thank Nick enough for choosing to support Hope House while putting himself through the Enduroman Arch2Arc Challenge.
“Without people in our community like Nick we would not be able to continue to provide the vital services to children, young people and their families in our area. Everyone at Hope House wishes Nick the best of luck, go Nick.”
