A THIEF drove off with more than they bargained for last week after stealing a van full of pies.
The culprit climbed into the vehicle belonging to Battams butchers on Beatrice Street just after 9am on Wednesday, January 22 and raced off taking with them £300 worth of tasty snacks.
The van was recovered several hours later on the Cambrian Railway car park undamaged.
Kev Battam, owner of the business, explained Derek Pollard, who delivers for Battams had returned from one run and was loading up round the back of the butchers off Orchard Street ready for the industrial estate run when the silver Ford Connect van was taken.
He said: “He went to get the last tray and when he went back to the van it was gone.
“The van pulled out in front of the Dial a Ride bus, normally it is nose to tail at that time but they managed to get out – we saw it going past the shop!”
Mr Battam doesn’t believe the thief was after the pies as several trays flew out the back of the van onto Beatrice Street as the back doors were left open.
He continued: “They were just very opportunistic. The poor driver is pretty shook up, it takes your breath away something like that.
