A WELSH border town will be in full bloom again next year after being invited to enter the prestigious RHS Britain in Bloom awards.
Chirk was nominated by officials shortly before Christmas to participate in the contest following its win in 2012.
Jackie Allen, chairman of the Chirk Community Forum which leads the In Bloom entries, said it was “an honour” to represent the country once more.
“We are thrilled,” she continued.
“It is an honour for us, especially as we are such a small group.”
The town could not participate in the 2013 competition because it had come joint first with Kippax, Leeds in the Urban Community category in 2012 - the first time the town had entered the nationwide competition.
However, Mrs Allen said they would be fighting to take the win in their own right next year.
She continued: “It would be very nice. It was amazing to get the gold, but the competition is always very tough.
“So now we are urging anybody who wants to help us to get on board because we need that support if we are going to succeed in 2014.
“We have no plans of what we are going to do yet, our first meeting is today (Tuesday), then the judges come in the first two weeks of August,” Mrs Allen added.
Councillor Ian Roberts, who represents Chirk North at Wrexham County Borough Council, commented: “The Community Forum have done a brilliant job over the past few years and to be able to go into Britain in Bloom is an honour and shows how much we have come on in the last 10 years.
“It is a lot of hard work for the people who do it, but to be recognised and to do something special for Chirk and the people of Chirk, who love it and the village looking nice, makes it worthwhile.”
He added: “It would be nice to win it again, as long as we win it doesn’t matter if it’s a joint win.”
Last year, Chirk hosted the awards ceremony for the 2013 Wales in Bloom competition in which the town gained a Silver Gilt, coming second to long-term rivals, Tenby in the Small Town category.
