CLEARING a blocked ditch of dumped rubbish has cost taxpayers more than £900.
The pricey tidy-up was prompted by complaints from a resident in Hazel Grove, Oswestry, over flooding caused by a build up of detritus in a watercourse which runs along the back of the former sports centre in College Road.
When contractors were called in they filled two 7.5 tonne skips with rubbish and debris, including a number of needles, at a cost of £900.
Cllr Martin Bennett said: “I am grateful to the officers for responding so quickly and well to this complaint and now that it has been cleaned up we will be inspecting it regularly to ensure it’s kept in a reasonable condition.
“Given the state of our budgets, conjuring up nearly a thousand pounds overnight to pay for the work will not be easy and of course is money that might have been spent on better things.
“It really annoys me that people can be so careless, lazy and unthinking of others that they simply dump their rubbish instead of taking it to the Maesbury Road site.”
He is urging residents to keep an eye out for any further problems and to report them to him at firstname.lastname@example.org or 01691 650251.
