A SYNDICATE from an Oswestry day centre were celebrating last week after they won on the Euromillions.
With five winning balls the nine staff members from Shropshire Council’s Lorne Street Day Centre won just over £28,200 on the lottery last Friday (September 6).
It means they take home £3,144.10 each.
But it took more than two days before they realised their good fortune.
“We came in as usual on Monday and went to check the ticket where we bought it, at Tina’s (E. G. and Tina Evans’ Convenience Store in York Street),” said Claire Jones, Assistant Locality Organiser at the centre, “She was so excited when she said we had won, so I rang the National Lottery because we didn’t know much we had won.
“It felt like I was on the phone for ages, then they told us we’d got five numbers on Friday’s Euromillions and won £28,000!”
The group claimed their winnings with a cheque on the same day, with Claire adding: “It didn’t sink in until we had the cheque and we banked that straight away!
“We couldn’t believe it.”
The nine members, who work with adults with learning disabilities, then received their winnings in cash on Friday.
Claire explained that the syndicate, which was formed around 12 months ago, play the Euromillions on a Friday and the National Lottery on a Saturday with a Lucky Dip.
But they have only ever enjoyed small wins on the European draw.
“We’ve all got ways we can spend it,” she continued, “It’s nice for the staff here, a nice boost for us all.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Monday morning.
“We’ve had people ringing up from all of the place congratulating us and saying that ‘it couldn’t have happened to a nicer team’, which is lovely.”
Pam Lewis, from Tina’s said: “It’s brilliant for them.
“It’s lovely to know we sold them the ticket.
“The lottery is always busy, but you never know, we could be a lucky ticket-winning store.”
