CHIRK Railway Station lost its Keep Wales Tidy Awards crown last week when it narrowly lost out to Caersws.
The adopted station was runner-up in the Best Unstaffed Station in Wales category, a title it was looking to defend when it went up against the Mongomeryshire station and neighbouring Ruabon Station.
Christine Ashford, who represented Chirk alongside fellow adoptee Angela Ree, was presented with a framed certificate and a £50 garden voucher by Geraint Morgan, Marketing Manager of Arriva Trains Wales and John Griffiths, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development at the event held at Cardiff Bay on Wednesday.
She commented: “Lesley Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Keep Wales Tidy, congratulated Chirk on the appearance of our station as she travels through to Wrexham to visit her family.
“It was a great opportunity to speak to volunteers who do amazing environmental work for the love of it and the garden voucher will come in handy for buying bedding plants for this year’s floral display.”
Chirk Railway Station was adopted by a group of local residents through an Arriva Trains Wales scheme. The team volunteer their time to its maintenance and host community events that bring local organisations and schools down to the site to further that work.
