THE euphoria of Great Britain’s Olympic Summer may be waning, but thanks to one local builders merchants unique stock from the iconic Games are still up for grabs.
JC Dyke Supplies are currently selling around 5,000 items that were used by Olympic and Paralympic athletes at last year’s London Games
The unique and unusual memorabilia includes extendable beds – used by basketball players – canteen furniture, lockers, and even umpire chairs, all of which could have been used by household names.
Colin Dyke, proprietor of the Oswestry and Ellesmere-based company, explained it was impossible to say who had used the items, but added he was pleased to give local people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
He said: “It’s been really interesting and something a bit different. We’re not normally associated with a lot of the items we’ve purchased, but it’s always a good opportunity to bring a small amount of the Olympics back to Shropshire. We’ll probably not get the chance for many years to be involved in such an unusual and unique project.”
All removable items were stripped from the accommodation and sporting venues used in the two Games, including those outside London, to make way for future projects.
Around 80 per cent of the stock has been sold via a national website.
Speaking of the London Docks site where the collection was held, Mr Dyke said: “I think that hit me more than anything when I walked into the warehouse. It was a 200,000 sq ft warehouse full of items pulled from all over the country.”
He continued: “Such a large amount of furniture has kept us very busy with extra warehousing required, deliveries organised, sale through our eBay shop and sales delivery through our sites. The response has been really good, the bedroom sets have been flying off the shelves and all the items are good quality because of the nature of the Games.”
