RUSH-HOUR motorists facing more traffic misery in Wrexham have been told: “Sorry, but you’ll have to bear with us”.
As the Leader reported yesterday, a one-way system set up around roadworks outside Wrexham Maelor Hospital has caused mayhem along a nearby diversion
During the Monday morning and evening rush-hours, long queues built up on Bradley Road, Mold Road and Berse Road after Croesnewydd Road was made one-way.
Yesterday, there were similar chaotic scenes – especially in the morning – with drivers making their way into the town centre at one point forced to queue up on the A483 bypass.
Cllr Phil Wynn, who represents the Brynyffynnon ward which has been bearing the brunt of the congestion, said: “I sympathise with anyone caught in traffic but it is just unfortunate that a main road into town has to be resurfaced.
“I am told the tarmacing of the road outside the hospital main entrance will be finished later today (Tuesday) and they will then be starting on the stretch of road from the railway crossing to the River Gwenfro bridge.
“Hopefully, when it is finished early next week traffic patterns will return to normal.
“So, for now, the message to drivers is bear with us and if you can stagger your journey into town it might be worth doing that.”
Motorists have been venting their frustration on social networking websites.
One angry commuter, Justin Watson, posted: “Yesterday’s traffic problem repeated.
“Mold Road, Plas Coch, B&Q roundabout, Berse Road the tax office roundabout all gridlocked.”
And as the congestion spread to other main approach roads to the town, Dan Thornton wrote: “Never seen Ruthin Road so bad.”
John Bradbury, Wrexham Council’s head of environment, said of the work on Croesneywdd Road: “This is a major link in Wrexham and we are undertaking essential roadworks that can only be done in the daytime.
“It is inevitable there will be some inconvenience to motorists and we ask people to avoid the area if possible or to allow extra time for their journey.”
The one-way system was introduced after the work on Croesnewywdd Road caused gridlock when visitors and staff tried to leave the hospital car park at peak times.
