TWO people escaped serious injury after their helicopter crashed into a hillside next to the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel.

A 30-year-old man and a woman, 32, were heading for the landing site at Lake Vyrnwy Hotel at about 1.15pm on Monday, January 16, when their aircraft crashed.

Staff from the hotel, which is 100 yards away from where the couple crashed, were quickly on the scene and led the “walking wounded” away just moments before the helicopter burst into flames.

The couple were taken to the hotel until the arrival of paramedics, at which point they were airlifted from the scene by a RAF Valley helicopter.

Anthony Rosser, the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel manager, said: “I can confirm that a small privately-owned helicopter coming to land at the hotel crashed just after 1pm.
“We have a landing area – they were approaching that and landed in a field approximately 100 yards from the landing area,” he added.
He said staff who witnessed the crash went to the aid of the couple.
“They were basically walking wounded. We got them away from the scene by car and took them to the hotel.
“We think it was a pleasure trip, but don’t know that for sure. They weren’t booked to stay at the hotel,” he said.

He added the pair appeared to have been “very lucky”.
The Air Accidents Investigations Branch will now look into the cause of the crash.
