Fears for Bangor store as Peacocks goes into administration

THERE are new fears for jobs in the region as High Street clothing store Peackocks indicated its intention to go into administration.

The future of the clothing chain is hanging in the balance, after its company board members indicated on Monday that administrators would be appointed, after failing to reach a debt repayment deal with creditors.

This has prompted fears of store closures for the company, which has branches in Bangor, Holyhead and Caernarfon.

A statement issued by the Peacock Group said: "The board of the Peacock Group and its advisers have been discussing for some time the restructuring of the business with the group’s lenders.

“Unfortunately these talks have now concluded and no agreement has been reached. However, discussions with other potential investors are on-going.

“To protect the business whilst discussions with such investors are progressed, the directors of the Peacock Group have filed a notice of Intention to appoint an administrator.”

Peacocks, one of Wales' largest companies, has 611 stores across the UK employing around 10,000 staff.

Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones AM raised the difficulties being faced by the Welsh retailer in the Senedd on Tuesday.

He called on the First Minister to ensure that the company is made aware of any support that the Welsh Government can offer.

He said: “I am particularly concerned that the workforce at the Holyhead store is at risk of losing their jobs. It must be a very stressful time for them and their families and I am pressing the Welsh Government to do everything in its power to help
